Welcome to the Jōryū Budo Hombu Dojo, the central hub for studying, refining, and sharing Jōryū Budo — the “Distilled Martial Way.” Led by Adam Hosie Sensei, our dojo offers a unique approach to martial practice that blends traditional wisdom with modern understanding, making timeless principles relevant and practical in today’s world.

Adam Hosie Sensei has devoted decades to understanding the core of martial arts, distilling it into Jōryū Budo — a principle-based system that goes beyond rigid techniques. His teaching emphasizes adaptability, natural movement, and a pragmatic approach to real-world application. This commitment to clarity and depth has earned Sensei Hosie recognition from renowned martial artists such as Roy Goldberg and Terry Wingrove.

Roy Goldberg, a 7th Dan and Kyoju Dairi in Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutsu, is respected for his mastery of Aiki and his deep understanding of connection and energy. He has personally acknowledged Sensei Hosie’s skill and unique approach to principle-based martial practice, highlighting the clarity and adaptability that Jōryū Budo brings to the modern martial landscape. Terry Wingrove, a respected martial arts practitioner known for his encyclopedic knowledge and insights, has also recognised Sensei Hosie’s dedication to making complex principles accessible and functional. Their endorsements underscore the depth and universal applicability of Jōryū Budo.

At the Hombu Dojo, we believe that true martial effectiveness emerges from understanding and embodying core martial principles — balance, leverage, and biomechanical control. Rather than relying on stylized forms, we teach how to apply these principles naturally and fluidly in any situation. This creates a dynamic, living practice that is deeply practical for self-defense and fosters profound personal growth.

Our approach balances structured learning with open exploration. Foundational drills provide a clear framework for understanding key principles, while exploratory practice encourages students to adapt and test these insights in varied contexts. This balance ensures that each practitioner develops confidence in applying martial principles not just in training, but in the real world.

A cornerstone of our syllabus is the techniques of Jutsu, which are practical expressions of these principles. They include kuzushi (unbalancing), Tai Sabaki (body movement), Atemi (striking), Kumiuchi (close engagement), Kansetsu waza (joint manipulation), nage waza (throws), ne waza (groundwork), and shime waza (strangulation techniques). These are not taught as rigid patterns but as adaptable skills that can be shaped to any situation, making them both practical for self-defense and invaluable for deepening your understanding of the art.

Jōryū Budo is supported by four interconnected pillars: Character, Knowledge, Skill, and Health. Character guides our interactions, fostering humility, respect, and a spirit of continuous improvement. Knowledge deepens our understanding of how these principles work, helping us apply them confidently and effectively in unpredictable situations. Skill is refined through precise, natural movement that is honed over time, creating a body that can adapt and respond with control. Health underpins every aspect of our training, promoting physical vitality, reducing stress, and nurturing mental clarity and resilience.

Jōryū Budo is not just about physical skill — it’s a path to holistic health. Training naturally improves posture, balance, and joint mobility. It builds functional strength through biomechanically sound movement, reducing the risk of injury and enhancing physical longevity. The practice’s mindful, principle-based focus helps release stress, fostering a calmer, clearer mind and greater overall resilience. These health benefits extend beyond the dojo, supporting a balanced, energized, and fulfilling life.

Classes at the Hombu Dojo take place every Thursday evening from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at Elm Avenue, Garden Village, Kingston Upon Hull. The first month is free, making it easy to explore this unique approach, with ongoing classes at £25 per month. Private lessons and special seminars are also available for those who want to dive deeper into the principles, self-defense applications, and health benefits of Jōryū Budo.
